A lot of you may argue that you need your laptop, phone or tablet to take notes. But how easy is it to slip and check an email that’s just popped in, or your Facebook feed when you’re bored?
Unless you need to show slides or demonstrate something on a computer, meetings should be unplugged: no phones, laptops or tablets allowed.
Whatever the situation, if I’m leading or speaking at a meeting, I find the use of tech distracting and disrespectful.
Putting how I feel aside, there are still very good reasons why we should be focused in a meeting and not accessing our technology.
Recent studies tell us that the brain can’t do multiple activities at once. The brain is switching between two tasks really quickly, so it feels like you are multitasking but actually you are adding time for the completion of both. In fact, according to a Psychology Today article, you can actually decrease your productivity by up to 40 per cent.
So not only will taking technology out of meetings make them more focused, you will likely feel more energised, more efficient and make fewer mistakes.
So leave your laptop at the desk and put your phone in your pocket and on silent — that means no vibrating buzz!
When you are fully focused and present in a meeting you increase its productivity by up to 40 per cent.
